Challoner proposes Tube police patrols to curb fare evasion

Businessman Alex Challoner has announced plans to tackle fare evasion on the London Underground by stationing uniformed British Transport Police officers at ticket gates. The proposal is part of his bid to secure the Conservative nomination for Mayor of London.

Mr Challoner stated that over the past 10 years, more than £1.1 billion in revenue has been lost due to fare dodging. He aims to end what he described as a culture where individuals evade fares with no consequences. His plan includes plain clothes officers working alongside uniformed personnel across the network, with Transport for London staff also receiving training to challenge suspected fare evaders.

Broader Policy Proposals

Beyond transport, Mr Challoner is advocating for tax cuts on gym memberships, arguing they support both physical and mental wellbeing. He also proposes a zero VAT rate for independent brewers, which he believes are central to the capital's nightlife. While the Mayor does not have direct power over VAT, Mr Challoner suggested City Hall could offer rebates.

Mr Challoner also outlined plans to reform the London Plan, aiming to reduce its length and complexity to encourage more home building. He previously served as campaign director for the Steve Norris London Mayoral Campaign in 2000 and sought the Conservative nomination in 2023.

Mayoral Candidacy Deadline

The deadline for candidates to submit nominations for the Conservative mayoral candidacy is September 30. Sir James Cleverly, the former Foreign Secretary, is considered the frontrunner for the nomination, having secured support from a majority of Conservative councillors in London. Former police commissioner Festus Akinbusoye has also put his name forward.
