Lime cyclist fined and banned after Fleet Street pavement incident

A Lime e-bike rider has been fined and banned from the service after an incident on Fleet Street on July 31. The cyclist was filmed weaving between pedestrians on the pavement to avoid an oncoming bus. He then made an offensive gesture to a woman who remonstrated with him.

Identification and consequences

City of London Police identified the rider with the help of Lime's e-bike tracking data. The operator was able to pinpoint the specific e-bike used at the time and location of the incident. Following identification, the rider was invited to a police station. He accepted a fine for careless cycling and offered an apology to the pedestrian.

Lime has also permanently banned the cyclist from using its services. Alice Pleasant, Lime’s UK deputy regional head for government relations, stated that safety is fundamental to Lime’s service in London and that the company does not tolerate behaviour putting pedestrians or other road users at risk.

Police response

Sergeant Stuart Ford, cycling team lead for City of London Police, commented on the collaboration between the police and Lime. "The fact that we were able to identify this rider with the help of Lime demonstrates what can be achieved when we combine our extensive CCTV network with technology and information held by our partners," he said. Sergeant Ford added that while not every offence is serious, it is important to act on behaviour that makes people feel unsafe, as part of the force's 'Safer City Streets' approach.

He described the incident as a 'relatively low-level' offence but significant for the pedestrian involved, who had to take evasive action and was then subjected to an offensive gesture. The police aim to tackle serious offending while also addressing behaviour that compromises public safety on the streets.
