Daniel Ata-Baah banned from teaching after child sexual assault conviction

A former maths teacher from Beckenham has been permanently banned from teaching after being convicted of sexually assaulting a child under 13. Daniel Ata-Baah, 57, was barred by the Teaching Regulation Agency on 24 July 2025, following a criminal trial at Croydon Crown Court in November 2024.

Ata-Baah was found guilty of sexual assault by touching and sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years. He was also issued a 10-year sexual harm prevention order. The court heard he had asked a child to sit on his lap before touching her breasts over her clothing for his own sexual gratification.

No evidence of remorse, panel finds

The Teaching Regulation Agency panel concluded there was no evidence Ata-Baah had shown remorse or insight into his actions. A witness told the panel they believed they had seen his erect penis beneath his clothing during the incident.

The panel stated his conduct could endanger pupils and undermine public confidence in the teaching profession. It found he had exploited a position of trust and that there was no reason to believe the behaviour would not be repeated if he returned to teaching.

The Secretary of State’s decision-maker imposed a prohibition order with no review period. Ata-Baah is now permanently barred from teaching in schools, sixth-form colleges, relevant youth accommodation, or children’s homes in England. He cannot apply to have his teaching eligibility restored.

Employment history and suspension

Ata-Baah taught at City of London Academy Southwark from 1 January 2018 until 9 November 2019. He was suspended for most of that period following allegations of sexual abuse made in 2018. The abuse did not involve any pupils at the school, as reported by News Shopper.

He resigned shortly after the allegations were made. The Teaching Regulation Agency confirmed the abuse was unrelated to his employment at the academy.

What happens next

Ata-Baah remains subject to the 10-year sexual harm prevention order issued by Croydon Crown Court. The Teaching Regulation Agency prohibition order is permanent and cannot be reviewed. There are no further legal proceedings related to his teaching status.
