Fireworks aimed at Maida Vale synagogue by youths

Police are investigating an incident where a group of youths reportedly launched fireworks towards the Lauderdale Road Synagogue in Maida Vale. The incident occurred on Sunday, September 13, the second day of Rosh Hashanah. The Metropolitan Police confirmed they were called to reports of suspects discharging fireworks at the synagogue on Ashworth Road, Westminster.

Officers attended the scene but the suspects had left before their arrival. No injuries were reported. The synagogue was empty at the time of the incident, and no damage to the building was reported. The Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi Community, which runs the synagogue, informed its members of the event.

Increased Police Presence and Community Response

In response to the incident, the Metropolitan Police have increased patrols in the neighbourhood. A police spokesman stated that these additional patrols are in place to ensure Jewish communities feel safe, protected, and reassured during this important religious period. The force reiterated its commitment to protecting Jewish communities and ensuring people can worship without fear of hate crime or intimidation.

The Community Security Trust (CST), a Jewish community security organisation, is working closely with the police to establish the full circumstances of the incident. A CST spokesperson described it as a "serious incident."

Rabbi Amir Ellituv, from the synagogue, stated that the incident would not deter the community from gathering. He said, "Jewish families should be able to come together to celebrate Rosh Hashanah safely, openly and without fear."
