Isaac Shozi charged with arson after ten fires set in London Fields

A man has been charged with arson after setting around ten small fires in London Fields, Hackney, early on Saturday. The Metropolitan Police said officers and the London Fire Brigade responded to multiple reports of fires near Lansdowne Drive at 05:07.

Isaac Shozi, 50, of Bodney Road, Hackney, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of arson, setting fires and possession of a Class A drug. He was later charged with arson and remanded in custody. Shozi will appear at Barkingside Magistrates' Court at 10:00 on Monday 17 August.

No injuries but risk of rapid spread

The London Fire Brigade extinguished all ten fires within London Fields. The Metropolitan Police confirmed no injuries were reported, but warned of the dangers of fires spreading quickly, particularly after recent hot weather.

Detective Superintendent Liz Cumber, who leads policing in central east London, said the force takes such incidents seriously. She said: “No one can be in any doubt about the dangers of starting fires. Even small fires can spread quickly and put people, buildings and open spaces at risk.”

Cumber added that police work closely with the London Fire Brigade to investigate such incidents. She urged the public to call 999 immediately if they witness a fire or behaviour that could pose a risk.

What happens next

Shozi will face a first hearing at Barkingside Magistrates' Court on Monday 17 August. The court will decide whether to remand him in custody or grant bail ahead of further proceedings.

The Metropolitan Police have not released further details about the suspected Class A drug possession. It is unclear whether additional charges will be brought.
