Man arrested after 75-year-old woman dies following burglary

A 46-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of Rose Smith, a 75-year-old woman who died following a burglary in Tollington Park, Islington. The arrest was made on Friday, 21 August, on suspicion of murder and aggravated burglary. The man remains in police custody.

Investigation into burglary and death

The Metropolitan Police were called to reports of a burglary in Tollington Park at approximately 9:20pm on Tuesday, 11 August. Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service. Mrs Smith was assessed by paramedics and taken to hospital, where she sadly died the following day, 12 August, at 9:39pm. She was named as Rose Smith by her family.

An 81-year-old man was also treated for injuries sustained at the scene and was taken to hospital. He was discharged the next day.

Police appeal for information

Detective Chief Inspector Ben Massink, leading the investigation, stated that while an arrest has been made, the incident has caused significant concern within the local community. He confirmed that an increased police presence has been maintained in Tollington Park. Detective Massink thanked those who have provided witness accounts and reiterated the appeal for anyone with further information or doorbell footage to come forward, stating that no detail is too small.

Mrs Smith's family described her as a "truly wonderful, outgoing woman who was loved by so many people." They added that she "was the life and soul of every party" and had "a wonderful personality, a big heart and a way of bringing laughter and happiness wherever she went."
