A man has been arrested in Hackney following reports of an assault on three Jewish women. The Metropolitan Police were called to the Clapton Common area at approximately 13:40 BST on Monday. Officers arrived to find a man already detained by members of Shomrim, a Jewish neighbourhood watch group.

The arrested individual, a 33-year-old man, was taken into custody on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault. The women involved are believed to have sustained minor injuries. One of the women was reportedly pushing a baby in a pram at the time of the incident.

Hate Crime Investigation

The Metropolitan Police stated they are treating the incident as a suspected antisemitic hate crime. In response to the event, police patrols have been increased in the Clapton Common area to provide reassurance to the community. The force is actively engaging with community leaders.

Ch Insp Erica Crawshaw described the incident as "alarming and distressing" and expressed gratitude to the Shomrim volunteers for their actions in detaining the suspect prior to police arrival. She acknowledged the concern this event may have caused within Hackney's Jewish community.

Further Arrest

The 33-year-old man has since been further arrested in connection with a separate incident that occurred in Islington on Friday. This additional arrest is on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. The suspect remains in police custody.

The Metropolitan Police have issued an appeal for anyone with information regarding the Hackney incident, or any individuals who believe they may have been assaulted, to come forward.
