Man in 50s arrested after Putney stabbing shuts South Circular

A man in his 30s was stabbed outside a church on Upper Richmond Road in Putney on 19 August 2024. The Metropolitan Police were called to the scene shortly after 3.10 pm. The victim was treated by paramedics and London’s Air Ambulance before being taken to hospital, where he remains.

The South Circular, which runs along Upper Richmond Road, was closed between Charlwood Road and Ravenna Road overnight. The closure blocked traffic in both directions and diverted bus routes 337 and 430. A large crime scene was established, with a forensics tent erected near Putney Cemetery.

Arrest made, no wider threat to public

A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the suspect and victim are known to each other. In a statement, the force said there is no wider threat to the public. The man remains in custody while officers conduct urgent enquiries.

Witnesses to the incident are being asked to come forward. Police have set up a cordon and are guarding the scene, which includes the area outside the church and near Putney Cemetery. Images from the scene show multiple police vehicles and officers present.
