Youth violence and gang activity have escalated in the south London boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, leading to a significant increase in recorded gun crime. In the year ending August 2026, Southwark experienced a 23% rise in gun crime, while Lambeth saw a 22% increase compared to the previous year. The Metropolitan Police reported conducting targeted operations that resulted in over 700 arrests and the seizure of more than 40 weapons.

Factors Fueling Conflict

Officers from the Metropolitan Police's proactive offender targeting and management team described the challenges of engaging with vulnerable young people. They noted that summer months, when schools are closed, are a prime period for gang recruitment. Det Con Faisal El Issaoui explained that gangs target children from deprived backgrounds or those excluded from school, offering them money for carrying items or performing tasks. PC Zoe Ticehurst added that parents often become aware of their children's involvement when they return home with new possessions or go missing for days.

The proximity of rival gangs, some operating just minutes apart, contributes to frequent and violent clashes. El Issaoui identified gangs such as ABM (All About Money) and the O-Tray gang as examples of groups whose territorial disputes lead to 'tit-for-tat' violence that affects innocent bystanders. He also highlighted the role of social media in exacerbating tensions, with gangs live-streaming incursions into rival territories. A disturbing trend identified is a 'league table' system where violence is gamified, with points awarded for territorial incursions or targeting gang members, making ordinary passersby vulnerable.

Inquests Highlight Agency Failings

Recent inquests into the deaths of young people have exposed shortcomings in how public agencies cooperate and safeguard vulnerable children. An inquest into the death of 14-year-old Corey Junior Davis, killed in 2017, found 'collective failings' across multiple agencies. His mother had repeatedly sought help to protect her son from gang exploitation. Similarly, a safeguarding review into the 2024 death of 15-year-old Daejaun Campbell, who was stabbed, highlighted failures in inter-agency collaboration despite his mother's warnings about his grooming into drug dealing.

Det Supt Gareth Gilbert stated that children as young as 10 are being lured into gangs, underscoring the critical need for early intervention before they become too entrenched. Det Ch Supt Emma Bond, commander for the Lambeth and Southwark unit, acknowledged the pressure on resources, noting that officer numbers have fallen significantly over three years.

What Happens Next

The Metropolitan Police continue to conduct specialist operations aimed at reducing violence. However, the force faces challenges related to reduced officer numbers and resource constraints. Efforts are ongoing to engage with families and divert young people towards educational and apprenticeship opportunities. The police have appealed to the community for assistance in solving violent crimes.
