Two jailed for manslaughter after fatal stabbing outside Southwark McDonald's

Andres Tapia Londono and Christhofer Jesus Vasquez, both 18, have been sentenced to four years in prison each for the manslaughter of Yeray Sanchez Morales. The 17-year-old was fatally stabbed nine times in the neck and chest outside a McDonald's on Old Kent Road in Southwark.

Vasquez also pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and received an additional one-year sentence for that offence. The attack occurred when Yeray was approached by a group of youths while sitting outside the fast-food restaurant.

Broader Convictions in the Case

In total, eight other individuals, aged between 15 and 20 at the time of the incident, were convicted for their parts in the killing. These included Isaac Ros Ramirez, 18, who was convicted of violent disorder and received a community order, and Juan Betancourt Hoyos, 21, also convicted of violent disorder and given a community order. Three 16-year-old boys were convicted of violent disorder, with sentences ranging from a 12-month youth rehabilitation order to community orders. One of these 16-year-olds also pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article.

Investigation and Evidence

Specialist Metropolitan Police detectives used a range of evidence to link the suspects to the crime. This included mobile phone footage obtained from witnesses, social media images depicting bloodied hands and knives, and voice notes. Forensic analysis also played a key role, with DNA evidence recovered from a bottle used in the attack helping to identify one of the perpetrators.

Detective Sergeant Debbie Barge, who led the investigation, stated that the majority of teenagers present were horrified and thanked them for their cooperation. She added that detectives worked swiftly to prove the roles of those responsible and expressed hope that the convictions would bring some peace to Yeray's family.

Family's Grief

Yeray's mother, Elena Morales, described her son as a sensitive, happy, polite, and generous young man who was always willing to help others. She spoke of his kindness and special way of connecting with people. 'Yeray had his whole life ahead. He was in love and full of dreams and projects,' she said. 'His death has left a wound so deep that it can never heal. The sadness and pain have scarred our family and his friends forever. As a mother, I have no words to describe the pain that crushes my soul.'

She described the entire process, from burying her son to attending court and hearing the details of his death, as unbearably painful.
