Woman raped in Covent Garden doorway, police appeal for witnesses

A woman in her 20s was raped in a doorway on Macklin Street in central London. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 22 August, at approximately 05:20am. The victim was walking through the Covent Garden area, including Shaftesbury Avenue, Cambridge Circus, and Drury Lane, when she was approached by a man.

The assailant dragged her into a doorway on Macklin Street before committing the assault. The woman managed to escape the scene and reported the incident to the Metropolitan Police shortly after. She is currently receiving support from specialist officers and victim services.

Appeal for Information

Detectives are investigating and have reviewed CCTV footage. They are seeking to identify a white man, described as being between 25 and 35 years old, with short dark hair. He was seen in the vicinity of Lisle Street and Drury Lane. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a grey hoodie, a dark gilet, casual trousers, trainers, and carrying a backpack.

The area was busy at the time of the assault. The Metropolitan Police are urging anyone who was in the Covent Garden area between 04:30am and 06:00am on Saturday, 22 August, to come forward with any information. Detective Chief Inspector Paul Ridley, who is leading the investigation, stated that officers are confident witnesses exist and that someone may recognise the man depicted in the footage.

DCI Ridley added that while he understands approaching the police can be difficult, all information provided will be handled with strict confidentiality. He stressed that any details, no matter how minor they may seem, could be significant to the investigation. Increased patrols are being conducted in the area.
