Fulham Pub Redevelopment Plans Submitted

Plans have been submitted to redevelop The Redback pub on Fulham Road, which closed five years after its 2019 opening when its operator, RedCat Leased Pubs Limited, went into administration. The venue was later occupied by squatters before being cleared by police.

Proposals for Redevelopment

The planning application, submitted by Mr K El Jalek, seeks permission to add an additional floor at roof level. It also proposes rear extensions on the first and second floors, and an enlargement of the existing basement. These alterations are intended to provide function rooms and ancillary facilities.

Mr El Jalek is listed as the sole director of 490-492 Fulham Road Ltd, the company associated with The Redback's address. He also recently obtained a licence to be the premises supervisor for the venue.

Local Hopes and Concerns

Charlotte Dexter, from the campaign group FulhamTogether, expressed hope for an "imaginative new concept" for the building. She suggested a contemporary pub with boutique guest rooms, serving discerning visitors and complementing nearby developments like the restoration of Fulham Town Hall.

Ms Dexter stated that such a development could preserve the building's role as a public house while avoiding the late-night disruption that previously led to police intervention. Another local resident suggested a more upmarket pub, but questioned the need to double the building's size, stating it did not make financial sense.

Residents also indicated that plans for a gambling site would be poorly received, emphasizing the need for a pub on that section of Fulham Road.

Next Steps

A consultation on the planning application closed on September 16. Council officers are now assessing the submission and the feedback received from local residents. The future of The Redback is expected to become clear soon.
