Hackney Council to decide on Stoke Newington sauna plan

Hackney Council is expected to make a decision on a proposed community sauna at the Grade II* listed Stoke Newington Pumping Station. Community Sauna CIC has applied for permission to install a timber cabin capable of holding up to 16 people, along with two cold showers, on the southern boundary of the pumping station's grounds. The site, known locally as the 'Castle' due to its medieval-style architecture, already houses an indoor climbing centre.

Resident Concerns and Planning Officer Recommendation

The plans have faced opposition from 12 neighbouring residents who submitted formal objections. Their concerns centre on potential noise from the facility and the impact of proposed LED lighting, which they fear will cause glare into their homes. Objectors also raised worries about increased foot traffic and potential footpath obstruction if the sauna becomes popular. However, council planning officers have recommended approval for the development. They concluded that the proposed cabin is of a size that would not significantly affect neighbours' light or privacy and that there would be no substantial increase in foot traffic. The council confirmed that adjacent land designated for community gardening would not be disturbed by the development.

Stephen Moorhouse, representing Community Sauna CIC, stated at a planning meeting on Wednesday, 2 September, that the organisation's aim is 'to bring communities together around an activity that improves wellbeing and to make that experience accessible to as many people as possible.' The planning officers have recommended that the council grant permission for the sauna for a temporary period of five years.

Next Steps

A final decision on the planning application is anticipated within five working days following the committee hearing. This proposed facility would join several other sauna complexes already operating across Hackney and other London boroughs.
