Lost 1963 song released by Hackney singer-songwriter

A song penned by Hackney resident Justin Lewis in 1963 has been recorded and released, more than six decades after its creation. The track, titled "You'll Never Know", was written by Lewis while he was serving in the RAF in Cyprus, stemming from a relationship that ended during his leave in the UK. He described the songwriting process at the time as "a bit of therapy".

Lewis, who was born in Jamaica and has lived in Hackney since 1979, rediscovered the manuscript for "You'll Never Know" three years ago while clearing out his house following the death of his wife. He brought the song to the attention of Jonny P Taylor, a Hackney-based singer-songwriter, who he met at Dalston Eastern Curve Garden. Taylor described Lewis as a "bright person who lit up the garden" and noted his "extraordinary history".

Recording and Release

Taylor, whose own songwriting has received praise from Elton John, agreed to help record the song. Lewis provided the original lyrics and hummed the melody, but asked Taylor to perform the vocals. Taylor made some adjustments to the song, including adding a chorus, while aiming to preserve its original sentiment. The recording took place at a studio in Baker Street, with Taylor playing all instruments and providing harmonies. Lewis was present throughout the recording sessions.

"You'll Never Know" was officially released on September 1st. The release precedes a film currently in production that explores Justin Lewis's life and family background. His father, Ed "Bim" Lewis, was part of the Jamaican comedy and music duo Bim and Bam, who were influential in opening opportunities for Black Caribbean performers. Lewis himself has a varied background, having designed Afrocentric greetings cards and appeared in a Roger Moore James Bond film.

Lewis expressed his affection for Hackney, describing it as a vibrant place that has become lively and diverse. He also referred to Dalston Eastern Curve Garden, where he and Taylor formed their friendship, as "an oasis in a concrete desert". Discussions are underway for Lewis to perform "You'll Never Know" live at the garden with the Hackney Dudes band.
