Mitcham Tenant's Home Collapses Amid Cockroach Infestation
A ceiling collapse and ongoing water damage highlight severe disrepair in a Mitcham HMO, prompting MP intervention.
Incident → evidence → outcomeA Mitcham resident has described his home as being in a state of severe disrepair, with a cockroach infestation and water pouring down walls following a ceiling collapse. Shem Barnes-Smith, a tenant in a multiple occupancy home, reported that the ceiling fell through on October 24, forcing him to use pots and pans to collect water. He has also spent £50 on a water removal machine. Mr. Barnes-Smith, a telecoms engineer, told MyLondon that he has complained to his housing provider, Aves Housing, more than 100 times over the last three years about ongoing issues, including water seeping down walls from a roof leak.
The conditions at the property have caused Mr. Barnes-Smith significant distress, leading to diagnoses of PTSD, anxiety, and insomnia. He expressed feelings of being let down and concerned about providing a safe environment for his unborn child. The property also reportedly features a faeces-ridden toilet shared among four residents.
MP Intervention and Council Action
The situation has drawn the attention of Dame Siobhain McDonagh, MP for Mitcham and Morden, who is advocating for Mr. Barnes-Smith. Dame Siobhain stated that Aves Housing is aware of the tenants' concerns but has not yet acted. She has contacted Aves Housing and Merton Council, requesting an urgent visit from Environmental Health to the property.
A spokesperson for Merton Council confirmed their concern and stated that the council has arranged a visit to assess the damage. The council indicated that swift action will be taken if any breaches of housing standards by the provider are identified. Aves Housing acknowledged Mr. Barnes-Smith's difficult experience, particularly following the storm damage. They reported offering him alternative accommodation on multiple occasions and are collaborating with MOAT Housing Association, which is responsible for the roof, to carry out necessary repairs. Aves Housing also stated they are reviewing their response to the incident and have offered to meet with Mr. Barnes-Smith to discuss his concerns.
