Walthamstow Salvation Army is organising a free winter coat swap for the community. The event will take place at the church located at 434 Forest Road, Walthamstow, on Saturday, 7th November, between 9:30 am and 1 pm. This initiative allows residents to donate, swap, or collect warm coats for adults and children without charge.

Donations of clean, warm coats can be brought to the church from Monday, 26th October, up until Thursday, 5th November. This marks the fifth year the Walthamstow branch has run the coat swap, having begun the tradition in 2021 in response to the increasing cost of living.

Community Support and Sustainability

Last year, the event facilitated the donation and redistribution of approximately 500 coats. Major Julie Pell, church leader at Walthamstow Salvation Army, highlighted the growing need for basic necessities like warm clothing. She stated, "As the cost of living continues to increase and temperatures fall, we see every day how many families and individuals in our community are struggling to afford the basics like a warm winter coat."

Major Pell added that the event aims to offer practical assistance while preserving dignity, with everyone welcome to select items they need without any questions asked. The initiative also aligns with The Salvation Army's mission priority of Caring for Creation by encouraging the reuse of clothing to prevent it from ending up in landfill.

This particular campaign is organised by Walthamstow Salvation Army and is not a national initiative by the wider organisation. The church also hosts a Community Living Room every Friday, offering a space for people of all ages to meet and socialise over refreshments.
