A van driver making a hospital blood delivery has been imprisoned for intentionally knocking a cyclist off his bike. Mark Okotie, 44, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent after a trial. He received a sentence of three years and six months at Woolwich Crown Court.

The incident occurred on the evening of 20 March 2024, on New Cross Road in Lewisham. Court proceedings heard that Okotie moved his van into the left lane without apparent observation, coming close to the cyclist. At the subsequent traffic lights, the cyclist spat towards the van, with the substance entering the open driver's window. Dashcam footage presented in court showed Okotie sharply turning the steering wheel, causing the cyclist to be forced under two of the vehicle's wheels.

The victim suffered multiple fractures to his pelvis and femur, necessitating surgery. He reported to the Metropolitan Police that his injuries had halted his previous active lifestyle, preventing him from jogging and other physical pursuits. His injuries required the insertion of numerous screws and plates.

Sentencing Okotie, Recorder Neil Haythorne described the act as 'extreme road rage', noting it appeared out of character. The judge opted not to ban Okotie from driving, acknowledging he had continued to do so since the collision. Mandisa Knights, representing Okotie, informed the court that he is a father of eight with a grandchild and mentors young people. She stated that his momentary lapse in retaliation had severe consequences, and he would have to explain his actions to those he mentors.

Detective Inspector Steven Andrews of the Metropolitan Police highlighted that Okotie was transporting blood intended for hospital patients. He stated that instead of completing a journey that could have supported life-saving treatment, Okotie chose to endanger another person's life.
