Broadmoor patient Axel Rudakubana faces court over prison assaults

Axel Rudakubana, who is currently at Broadmoor psychiatric hospital, is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday. The 20-year-old will participate in the hearing via video link. Rudakubana is serving a life sentence for the murders of three young girls and the attempted murder of eight other children and two adults.

Charges and Allegations

Court documents indicate Rudakubana faces three charges stemming from incidents while he was held in prison. These include attempting to cause grievous bodily harm in May 2025, assaulting an emergency worker in October 2025, and possession of an offensive weapon in prison in June 2025. The alleged weapon in the latter charge was stone shards, according to court documents. Separately, it was alleged that Rudakubana poured boiling water from a kettle over a prison officer in May 2025.

Transfer to Broadmoor

In July 2025, the Ministry of Justice confirmed Rudakubana's transfer from prison to Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire. This move occurs when offenders present an increased risk and cannot be safely managed within a prison setting due to mental disorders. In such secure units, individuals are treated as patients. Under the Mental Health Act, officials are required to follow the advice of clinical professionals when transferring prisoners to secure facilities.

Once in a secure hospital, offenders are required to engage with treatment and therapies. A return to prison or release into the community can only occur when they no longer require hospital treatment. The Act allows for a swift return to prison if this condition is met.
