Camden Councillor Challenges Polanski for Holborn & St Pancras Green Seat

Camden councillor Hamza Chowdhury has launched a challenge against Zack Polanski for the Green Party's nomination in the upcoming Holborn and St Pancras by-election. Mr Chowdhury stated that the constituency requires a representative who is consistently present and engaged with the community, rather than one who appears only during election periods.

Candidate Selection Process

Mr Chowdhury announced that he has secured nominations from six Green councillors within Camden. The deadline for nominations was Monday, with a decision expected on Thursday and an announcement on Friday. While some party insiders suggest that certain nominators may ultimately support Mr Polanski, their involvement aims to broaden the selection process. The Green Party plans to deploy a significant number of activists to campaign in the seat, similar to their strategy in the Gorton and Denton by-election.

The by-election, triggered by Sir Keir Starmer's resignation as MP for the North London constituency, is scheduled for October 8. This date falls shortly after the Green Party's annual conference, which could affect the availability of key party members and activists. Mr Polanski has expressed his commitment to the community, stating he knows and loves the area where he has lived and worked for many years. However, it has been reported that he intends to commute to Holborn and St Pancras from his residence in Hackney if elected, rather than relocating to the constituency.

Labour's Candidate

Meanwhile, the Labour Party is also in the process of selecting its candidate. Three Camden councillors, including the borough leader Sagal Abdi-Wali, have been shortlisted. Labour is expected to announce its chosen candidate on September 9.

Candidate's Stance

Mr Chowdhury, who identifies as British Bengali and was born in the area, believes a candidate from the Global Majority would be best positioned to win and represent the diverse population of Holborn and St Pancras. He highlighted his personal connection to the area, having grown up there and been elected with a substantial majority in Holborn & Covent Garden in May. He emphasised his daily experience with local issues such as housing, estate maintenance, and public services, asserting his deep understanding of the community's needs.
