Earlston Bennett, 58, from Croydon, was found guilty of murdering his partner Sarah Reynolds and of controlling and coercive behaviour. The convictions were secured at Southwark Crown Court on October 6. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) London Homicide Unit described a harrowing pattern of abuse throughout the couple's relationship.

Abuse and Death

On April 12, 2025, Bennett contacted emergency services, stating Ms Reynolds had taken an overdose. Paramedics attending their Croydon home found her unresponsive and observed fresh bruising on her body, which Bennett attributed to the overdose. Ms Reynolds was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination later determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head and torso. No evidence of an overdose was found.

Evidence presented in court indicated Bennett had been abusive and controlling during their relationship. Messages exchanged between the pair revealed aggressive and emotionally manipulative behaviour. Friends and family of Ms Reynolds had noted unexplained bruising on her and observed her increasing isolation from loved ones.

“The evidence in this case painted a devastating picture of the fear, isolation and control Sarah experienced in the years leading up to her death, and her injuries exposed the violence and cruelty inflicted on her behind closed doors at the hands of someone she should have been able to trust.”
— Bethan David, deputy chief crown prosecutor for the CPS London Homicide Unit
