Driver faces trial over fatal A12 collision

Lee Culleton, 45, is set to stand trial in May 2027 accused of causing the death of Anwar Shinwari by dangerous driving. The collision occurred on July 19 at approximately 9:20 PM at the junction of the A12 and Whalebone Lane North. Mr Shinwari, 28, lived on Westwood Road in Goodmayes, an area near the crash site.

Further Charges and Court Proceedings

Culleton, who is being held in prison, faces additional charges including failing to stop at the scene, driving without insurance, driving while disqualified, and the fraudulent use of a registration mark. His case was listed for a plea and trial preparation hearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday, August 25. The hearing was adjourned until September 8, as Culleton was not present.

Anwar Shinwari's cause of death was determined to be multiple injuries following a post-mortem examination, as previously heard by East London Coroner’s Court. Tributes were left at the scene following the incident, with messages of solidarity from fellow riders. A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist Mr Shinwari’s family with funeral expenses and to repatriate his body to Afghanistan.
