Gang jailed for £150k phone shop raids across LondonLondon Crime News

Three men have been convicted and sentenced for their involvement in a series of phone shop robberies across London, which resulted in the theft of approximately £150,000 worth of devices. The group targeted mobile phone retailers, including O2 and Three stores, between May 28 and June 9 last year. During the raids, staff members were subjected to threats, abuse, and physical assaults.

Robberies and Sentences

The convictions followed an investigation by the Metropolitan Police's Flying Squad, which employed a covert surveillance operation. At Croydon Crown Court on Friday, Sammie Govera, 32, was sentenced to 13 years and six months imprisonment for his significant role in the robberies. The court heard that Govera, described as supervising younger participants, sent messages promising rewards to drivers involved in the criminal enterprise. Judge Antony Dunne characterised the offences as 'carefully planned robberies by an organised and professional group'.

Kevlin Duarte, 20, received a 22-month sentence in a young offenders' institution. Louis Pandanzyla, 19, was given an 18-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work. Pandanzyla, who was 17 at the time of the offences, was described by the judge as being exploited by older men. A 17-year-old boy, whose identity cannot be revealed for legal reasons, received a one-year youth rehabilitation order with intensive supervision, having also been exploited and facing a background of poverty and bereavement.

Impact on Businesses and Staff

The robberies, which involved gang members dressed in dark clothing and balaclavas forcing entry into storerooms and safes, occurred across various London locations including Lewisham, Woolwich, Wood Green, Haringey, Sutton, and Colliers Wood. Prosecutors stated that the incidents left staff members traumatised. O2 reported implementing new security measures, such as a one-in-one-out entry policy, which led to lost trade and additional costs for the company.

Detective Chief Inspector Laura Hillier of the Met's Flying Squad commented on the successful apprehension of the offenders. 'Our detectives worked quickly, piecing together CCTV, phone data and forensic evidence to catch them,' she said. 'Commercial robberies across London are down 13 per cent because of our relentless focus on pursuing and arresting those responsible.'

What Happens Next

The investigation has led to the conviction of three men, bringing the total number of people convicted in relation to this specific Met Police investigation to 10. The Metropolitan Police stated that their focus remains on pursuing and arresting those responsible for robbery offences in London.
