A Metropolitan Police inspector has been cleared of sexually assaulting three female colleagues during a night out in Soho. Dave Newman, 39, was acquitted on 13 August 2025 after a jury at Southwark Crown Court returned unanimous not guilty verdicts on all three counts.

Judge criticises investigation delays

The trial judge, His Honour Philip Bartle KC, expressed concerns about the handling of the case. He described it as "inexplicable" that some witnesses did not provide statements until late in the process. One officer was not asked for a statement until the trial had already begun.

Bartle said, "Criminal proceedings should take priority, whether it is the police force or any other organisation." He added that the delays in obtaining evidence raised serious questions about the investigation’s thoroughness.

I frankly find completely baffling that a police officer was not asked to provide a witness statement until the start of the trial.

Met Police responds to criticism

The Metropolitan Police rejected the judge’s criticism of its investigation. A spokesperson said, "We rebut any suggestion that this matter was not thoroughly investigated due to the report involving a serving police officer." The force noted that the jury’s verdict supported its position.

The statement, issued on 14 August 2025, did not address the specific procedural concerns raised by the judge. It emphasised that the case had been heard in court and resulted in acquittals.

Judge questions Soho drinks event

Bartle also raised concerns about a drinks event Newman hosted in Soho. He described it as "very troubling" and said it was "extraordinary" for a senior officer to organise an event where excessive drinking was likely.

The judge said, "It seems quite extraordinary that a senior police officer would host a drinks party in which it was inevitable that people would drink too much. I do find it very troubling that this took place at all, with shots being handed out."

What happens next

It is unclear whether the Metropolitan Police will conduct an internal review of the investigation’s handling. The force has not commented on potential disciplinary action against Newman or any procedural changes following the judge’s remarks.

Newman remains a serving officer. The Met has not confirmed whether he will return to active duty or face any further scrutiny over the events in Soho.
