No inquest for student killed by rapper Ghetts

A full inquest into the death of Yubin Tamang, a 20-year-old student, will not take place. The decision was made by Coroner Ian Wade KC at East London Coroner’s Court on Thursday, August 27. Mr Wade concluded that the Old Bailey had already thoroughly examined the facts surrounding Mr Tamang's death, making a separate inquest unnecessary.

Mr Tamang was killed in a hit-and-run incident on Redbridge Lane near Gants Hill. The driver, rapper Justin Clarke-Samuel, also known as Ghetts, was speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was one-and-a-half times over the legal drink-drive limit and travelling at speeds up to 70mph in his BMW M5.

Court Sentencing

In June, Clarke-Samuel pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at the Old Bailey. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Judge Mark Lucraft KC described CCTV footage of the events leading up to the collision as a “quite appalling litany of incidents” that was “simply shocking”.

Clarke-Samuel had claimed he was driving dangerously because he believed he was being followed. However, the court found no evidence to support this claim on CCTV footage. He later wrote a letter to Mr Tamang's family expressing his remorse.

Mr Tamang, a Nepalese national, had come to the UK to study. His mother stated in a court statement that Yubin was their only child and that he had come to the UK seeking the best degree. His roommate, Sushant Khadka, also read a statement describing Mr Tamang's dreams and future plans, noting the profound impact of his loss.

Coroner Wade determined that Mr Tamang died an unnatural death due to blunt force trauma sustained in the road traffic collision.
