People smuggler ordered to repay £290,000 or face more jail time
Md Mokter Hossain, already serving 10-and-a-half years, must pay within three months or serve an additional two years.
Incident → evidence → outcomeMd Mokter Hossain, aged 58, of Gaynes Hill Road, Woodford Green, has been ordered to repay £290,000 to the state or face an additional two years in prison. The order was granted by a judge at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 30 September. Hossain is currently serving a 10-and-a-half-year sentence, imposed in June 2023, for leading an organised crime group involved in smuggling people into and out of the UK.
Confiscation Order Details
The confiscation order was made under the Proceeds of Crime Act. It represents the maximum recoverable assets identified by financial investigators from the National Crime Agency (NCA). Hossain has three months from the date of the order to pay the £290,000. The NCA estimated Hossain made over £1 million from his criminal activities, which involved using complicit lorry drivers to transport individuals across the Channel. His network also facilitated the movement of fugitives wanted for serious crimes.
A Serious Crime Prevention Order (SCPO) was previously imposed on Hossain. This order, active for five years after his release from prison, places restrictions on his access to communication devices and bank accounts. It also requires him to report his finances, business interests, and travel intentions to the NCA. Breaching the SCPO can lead to further imprisonment.
“The orders imposed upon Hossain demonstrate that our activity does not stop once someone is convicted. We have continued to investigate Hossain’s finances to claw back as much criminal profit as we can under the Proceeds of Crime Act.”
Chris Hill, NCA Senior Investigating Officer, stated that the orders show the agency's continued work after conviction. He added that Hossain faces strict conditions to prevent re-offending. Tackling organised immigration crime is a priority for the NCA, and the agency is committed to using all available tools against those involved.
Further Convictions
The original NCA investigation into Hossain's group also resulted in the conviction of his second-in-command and several lorry drivers who were complicit in the smuggling operation.
