Russell Brand accuser cites 'lad culture' for reporting delayLondon Crime News

An alleged victim of Russell Brand told Southwark Crown Court that the prevailing 'lad culture' of the 2000s prevented her from reporting the comedian to the police after she claims he raped her. The woman stated she feared she would not be believed and would face negative judgment if she had come forward sooner.

The accuser described the incident as occurring in a toilet at the Nordic Bar in Soho in 2004, during a birthday party. When questioned about the nearly two-decade delay in reporting, she told the court that the thought of doing so 'terrified me'. She believed she would be 'torn apart in court' and face accusations of 'asking for it'.

Fear of Disbelief and Judgment

The woman told the court that in the early 2000s, reporting such an incident was difficult. 'In those days, you just weren’t believed as a woman and it was a lad culture of ‘you were wearing this, so you were asking for it’ and all that rubbish we were told back then,' she stated, as reported by The Standard.

She explained that at the time, Brand was a celebrity, and she felt it would be 'his word against mine'. She also worried about being 'ostracised in my work environment or friends'. The woman added that she felt the 'odds weren’t in my favour' and she did not want to endure a court process that involved 'tearing down my character'.

Allegations in Court

On the fourth day of evidence in his trial, the woman accused Brand of groping her breasts at the Nordic Bar before allegedly dragging her to a toilet cubicle and forcing her into oral sex. She recounted that Brand told her 'don’t be a spoilsport' when she attempted to reject his advances. She described Brand's expression as a 'big weird grin', likening it to a clown's face.

She told the jury she was left 'dazed' after the alleged attack, feeling as though she was watching a film of something happening to her. The woman also stated that at the time, she did not realise forced oral sex would be classified as rape. She expressed a desire to speak out but indicated she needed other women to come forward first.

During cross-examination by Brand's barrister, Ian Winter, the woman was questioned about not speaking out during the #MeToo movement. She replied that she was 'hoping somebody else would come forward' and did not want to be the 'first person to do that', as 'When you’re one little voice, you’re not sure if you’re going to be heard or believed'.

Defence Submissions

Mr Winter suggested that Brand and the woman went to the toilet consensually for a 'kiss and a cuddle', but that the encounter was abandoned due to the 'filthy state of the flooded toilet'. He also suggested Brand had not exposed himself to the woman after the alleged rape, and told jurors that the comedian has no memory of the incident.

The woman testified that she was 'absolutely appalled' when Brand was rehired by MTV in 2006. She had told a colleague about the encounter at the time, referring to Brand as a 'sexual predator'. However, she also gave evidence that she had told friends and family a version of the story prior to speaking to police in 2023, in which she stated there had been an incident but she got away before being raped, explaining 'I wanted to change the narrative so I wasn’t a victim in my head'.

Russell Brand denies all seven charges against him, which include three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault. The trial is ongoing.
