Three jailed for life for Tiverton Estate murder

Three men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Gregory Catillo Volquez, who was killed on the Tiverton Estate in Haringey. Benito Ramirez Kones, 20, Carlos Akum Metumbe, 22, and Luiggi Perelli Santana, 22, were found guilty of the killing which occurred on 13 January last year. Mr Volquez sustained 22 sharp force injuries and was also stamped and kicked during the attack.

The murder took place in a car park on the estate, out of sight of CCTV cameras. The court heard that an 'arsenal of knives', including a machete and a 'Rambo' knife, were later found hidden in two flats on the Tiverton Estate. A hospital crutch was also mentioned in relation to the attack.

Remorseless Attack

At Southwark Crown Court, the judge stated that the crime was 'truly wicked' and committed by 'very dangerous men', adding that none of the defendants had shown 'any real remorse'. The judge also remarked that the violence inflicted was 'grossly disproportionate to any threat he could have posed'.

Mr Volquez had spent the evening with a friend before travelling to Haringey. After leaving a flat on the Tiverton Estate, they were chased and attacked in the car park. Mr Volquez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Previous Convictions and Flight

The court was informed that two of the defendants had previous convictions for knife possession. At the time of the murder, Kones was serving a suspended sentence for possessing a locking knife. Santana was on court bail for a charge of having a machete in his trousers, similar to one found on the estate.

Following the murder, Metumbe and Santana fled to Spain. They were later extradited back to the UK to face charges.

Kones was arrested in Swansea, while Metumbe and Santana were apprehended after their return from Spain. Santana and Kones were given minimum prison terms of 23 years, and Metumbe received a minimum term of 22 years.
