Chipping Barnet Vehicle Theft Falls 27%

Vehicle theft in Chipping Barnet has fallen by 27% compared to 2023 figures, according to data reported by MP Dan Tomlinson. In 2023, there were 574 incidents of vehicle theft in the area. This local reduction contributes to a wider trend across London, where vehicle theft is 4% lower than 2023 levels.

Mr Tomlinson stated that constituents frequently raised concerns about car and motorbike theft during his door-knocking efforts in 2024, indicating the issue's local impact. He emphasised that vehicle theft affects more than just property loss, impacting residents' sense of safety and dignity. The MP also highlighted connections between car theft and broader issues such as international crime, drug trafficking, and organised gang activity, noting that most car theft is now committed by such groups.

Interventions and Collaboration

Since his election in 2024, Mr Tomlinson has supported government legislation aimed at combating keyless vehicle theft and improving police responses. In Chipping Barnet, specific actions included connecting local officers with the National Vehicle Crime Reduction Partnership to secure grant funding for operations. He also facilitated the introduction of effective car theft prevention programmes and collaborated with technology firms to enhance the tracking and recovery of stolen vehicles. Discussions with car manufacturers regarding security systems were also part of the strategy.

A significant element of the strategy involved collaboration with the Labour Council to improve the area's CCTV network last year. Mr Tomlinson acknowledged that criminal strategies adapt to new interventions, and while levels are still too high and fluctuate quarterly, the fight against vehicle crime is ongoing.
