Croydon restaurant closed after mouse infestation, given zero hygiene rating

Rio Lounge, an Indian restaurant located in East Croydon, has reopened after a food hygiene inspection on July 4 uncovered a significant mouse infestation and mouldy fridges. The inspection resulted in the restaurant being given the lowest possible food hygiene rating of 0.

Inspection findings

During the inspection, officials found the restaurant's fridges and their doors were heavily laden with food, debris, and mould. Expired food, with a label date of May 22, was also discovered. Inspectors noted mouse droppings around the premises, indicating a "significant infestation". Ventilation filters were heavily greased, and oil was observed running down the extraction system. The external rear area was poorly maintained, with rubbish accumulating and the back door left open, increasing the risk of pest entry. The wash hand basin was dirty and contaminated with food debris, and floor surfaces were cracked and filled with food debris, hindering effective cleaning.

The official inspection report stated that the "level of infestation present represents a significant risk of contamination of food, food contact surfaces, equipment and the premises." All food was disposed of, and the restaurant was required to undertake a deep clean, address structural defects to prevent pest ingress, and have staff complete refresher food hygiene courses.

Closure and reopening

Rio Lounge, which opened in 2024 at 162-164 Cherry Orchard Road, voluntarily closed immediately following the July inspection due to what Croydon Council described as an "immediate risk to public health". The council allowed the restaurant to reopen on July 28 after reviewing three consecutive pest control reports that found no further evidence of mouse activity. Council officers conducted follow-up visits during the closure to ensure the restaurant remained shut and was not serving food.

A spokesperson for Croydon Council stated: "Protecting public health is a priority for the council, and we take a zero-tolerance approach to businesses that put residents at risk. Our food safety team works with businesses to help them meet hygiene standards, while prioritising inspections and taking enforcement action where necessary."
