Southall man admits murdering Michael O'Donnell
Christopher Donnelly pleaded guilty to murder and fraud after exploiting his victim for years.
Christopher Donnelly, 54, has pleaded guilty to the murder of Michael O'Donnell, 66, at Southwark Crown Court on October 19. Donnelly also admitted to fraud by false representation. The court heard how Donnelly had coercively controlled and exploited Mr O'Donnell for years, stealing thousands of pounds from him before killing him in his own home.
Discovery of the body
The Metropolitan Police were alerted to concerns for Mr O'Donnell's welfare at his address on Samara Drive in Southall on April 23 last year. Officers attending the property discovered Mr O'Donnell's body, confirming he had died several weeks earlier. Donnelly, who had been living at the address, was arrested on suspicion of murder later that day. He was found in possession of three bank cards and a bus pass belonging to Mr O'Donnell.
Post-murder exploitation
Following the murder, Donnelly attempted to conceal Mr O'Donnell's body under a mattress and piles of rubbish. Scotland Yard pieced together a timeline of events using CCTV, financial records, and witness accounts, with forensic experts using insect and larvae evidence to estimate the time of death. Police stated that Donnelly continued to access Mr O'Donnell's home and use his bank cards for gambling, sex workers, and drugs after the murder.
Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who led the investigation for the Met, described the case as revealing "a level of violence and callousness that is difficult to comprehend." He added that Mr O'Donnell was attacked in his home by someone who sought to "exert control and exploit him for his own gain." DCI Howie stated that Donnelly's actions to conceal the crimes and the body were "calculated, inhumane and deeply distressing."
Donnelly is scheduled to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on December 11.
