Yusuf Shah, who is now 18, has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison for providing cyber-security support to groups including al-Qaeda. Shah, who was 16 when he was arrested at Heathrow Airport, was convicted at Kingston Crown Court.

An analysis of Shah's phone revealed he had accessed an online magazine published by al-Qaeda containing information on how to carry out acts of terrorism. He also downloaded documents that included instructions on making explosives and using various weapons. The Metropolitan Police stated that Shah engaged in chat groups supporting terrorist organisations via the Telegram messaging app, where he offered technical assistance.

Cyber-security assistance offered

At one point, Shah advised members of a chat group on how to make an untraceable cryptocurrency donation to al-Qaeda. In March 2024, an individual on Telegram approached Shah to assist in creating a cyber-security guide for Tehrik-e-Taliban (TTP), a designated terror group. This individual stated that a senior TTP official had requested his help. Shah subsequently produced and sent a document titled "A Guide on Cybersecurity", which contained detailed information on cyber-security and cryptocurrency use.

Shah was convicted of three counts of collecting terrorist materials, one count of entering into an arrangement to make funds available for terrorism, and one count of providing instruction intended for use in terrorist activities.

Growing trend of online radicalisation

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, highlighted that the police investigation found Shah was being exposed to extremist material and ideologies from the age of 13 or 14. She described this as reflecting a growing trend where young people are being radicalised and accessing dangerous terrorist ideologies and material online. Commander Flanagan urged parents and carers to be aware of their children's online activities and to engage with them about what they are doing.

Shah was stopped at Heathrow Airport in January 2024 under schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act. He is now 18 years old.
