Trevin Campbell jailed for life for Brixton murder

Trevin Campbell has been jailed for life for the murder of Gary Mayhew in Brixton. Campbell was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on Tuesday, 25 August, to life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 30 years. He had been found guilty of murder by a jury on Friday, 21 August.

Gary Mayhew, aged 32, died on 21 October 2021 after presenting himself at Kings College Hospital with gunshot wounds to his legs. Police were called to the hospital at approximately 06:13hrs. Officers established that Mr Mayhew had been shot minutes after leaving an event in Belinda Road, Brixton, around 06:00hrs that morning.

Investigation and Arrest

Campbell was identified as a suspect and arrested four days after the murder at Gatwick Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Jamaica. The firearm used in the shooting has not been recovered. Initial charges against Campbell were discontinued in January 2022 by the Crown Prosecution Service due to insufficient prospect of conviction.

Detectives continued their investigation. They reviewed key CCTV footage, recovered mobile phone data linking Campbell to the scene, and obtained expert ballistics evidence suggesting he fired a pistol concealed within his jacket. This led to his re-arrest on 12 December 2025. The Crown Prosecution Service authorised new charges, and Campbell appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on 13 December 2025.

Detective Inspector Emma Sharp, who led the investigation for the Metropolitan Police, described the case as complex and extensive, spanning several years. She stated that officers remained committed to securing justice for Gary Mayhew and his family. DI Sharp highlighted the use of detailed CCTV analysis, forensic examination, and expert witness evidence in demonstrating Campbell's responsibility for the murder. She added that the Met Police maintains a zero-tolerance approach to gun violence and serious crime, demonstrating determination to tackle gun crime and hold those responsible accountable.
