330 Banned from Notting Hill Carnival as Police Target Violence

More than 330 individuals have been subjected to bail conditions by the Metropolitan Police to prevent their attendance at this year's Notting Hill Carnival. This measure is part of a pre-emptive operation aimed at curbing violence during the August Bank Holiday weekend event.

Raids and Weapon Seizures

Scotland Yard, in conjunction with officers from Greater Manchester Police, conducted raids on addresses across London, arresting seven people on suspicion of robbery. These individuals are believed to be part of a gang that targets music events and festivals, with intelligence suggesting they may have been planning to target the carnival. Separately, police seized 66 zombie knives in north east London and 10 zombie knives, 30 flick knives, and a machete in east London.

Commander Claire Smart, Gold Commander for the carnival, stated that the majority of attendees come to celebrate safely. She added, "Our job is to help make sure they can do that safely." The operation will involve over 7,000 officers deployed across west London. Plans have been strengthened to target those intending to commit violence or engage in criminality, utilising intelligence-led tactics including stop and search.

Technology and Past Incidents

Live facial recognition cameras will be deployed at the carnival and its approaches. Last year, this technology identified 98 individuals, leading to 61 arrests and 30 registered sex offenders being stopped and spoken to. Commander Smart confirmed that preventing serious violence, protecting women and girls, and ensuring crowd safety remain key focuses. An order under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 will grant officers additional search powers to find weapons.

Last year's carnival saw 528 arrests, including 55 for assaulting police officers, 167 for drug offences, and 50 for possession of offensive weapons. Four stabbing or slashing incidents were also reported. British Transport Police have advised that public transport will be exceptionally busy, urging attendees to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious.

The Notting Hill Carnival takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Police will continue to monitor the event using increased officer presence and technological resources. Residents and businesses in west London have taken precautions, with some boarding up properties in anticipation of potential damage.
