7,000 officers to police Notting Hill Carnival's 60th year

More than 7,000 police officers are set to be deployed across west London to manage the 60th anniversary of the Notting Hill Carnival over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The Metropolitan Police stated that preventing serious violence and ensuring the safety of women and girls are primary objectives for this year's event.

Focus on Serious Violence and Vulnerable Individuals

Commander Claire Smart, who is the Gold Commander for the carnival, emphasised that while the vast majority of attendees come to celebrate, the police must focus on the minority who intend to cause harm. "Preventing serious violence, protecting women and girls and supporting the event organisers as they work to ensure crowd safety remain key areas of focus," Commander Smart said. The police will employ intelligence-led tactics, including stop and search and the increased use of live facial recognition cameras, to identify and intervene early with potential offenders.

As part of a proactive approach to disrupt criminality before it reaches the carnival, over 330 individuals are currently subject to bail conditions that prohibit them from attending. The Metropolitan Police also reported seizing numerous weapons, including 66 "zombie knives" in north east London and a further 10 "zombie knives", 30 flick knives, and a machete in east London, which could have been used at the event.

Disrupting Gang Activity and Enhancing Search Powers

Seven arrests were made on suspicion of robbery following raids on multiple London addresses. These individuals are alleged to be part of a gang that targets music events and festivals, with intelligence suggesting they may have previously targeted Notting Hill Carnival and had plans to do so again. To further enhance public safety, a Section 60 order will be in effect for the duration of the carnival. This grants officers additional powers to conduct searches without the usual requirement for reasonable suspicion, specifically to find and remove weapons.

In addition to these measures, officers have visited over 90 businesses in the Westminster area alone to raise awareness of child sexual exploitation and trafficking, advising staff on identifying warning signs and appropriate actions. British Transport Police will also have a significant presence across the rail network to ensure the safety of those travelling to and from the carnival.
