Met Police arrest 14-year-old in e-bike phone theft crackdown

A 14-year-old boy was detained by Metropolitan Police officers in Bermondsey on suspicion of attempted phone theft. The arrest took place during a targeted operation against criminals using e-bikes to snatch phones, with undercover officers involved in the pursuit.

Undercover officers spotted the boy attempting to steal a woman's phone near Tower Bridge. A pursuit ensued through Bermondsey involving officers in undercover vehicles and on motorbikes. After a brief chase, a member of the public directed officers to the boy's location, leading to his detention.

Operation Catchclaw Success

The Metropolitan Police reported that phone theft has fallen by 15.6% across London. A specific operation, known as Catchclaw, has contributed to a 22% reduction in phone thefts in the Waterloo area, a known hotspot for such crimes due to high footfall from tourists and commuters.

Between April and September, the Met Police arrested 223 individuals and seized 193 vehicles as part of their efforts to combat phone theft. Sergeant Ben Agguirre, who leads the operation, stated that young individuals are often exploited to commit these street-level thefts.

Sgt Agguirre explained that e-bikes are often used by young people for their speed, but many are ridden illegally and put riders and the public at risk. The police are aware that organised crime groups may be controlling some of these activities and are working to tackle both the street-level offenders and those orchestrating them.

Operation Catchclaw employs a combination of CCTV, facial recognition, and forensic analysis to identify offenders. The operation has also led to an increase in weapon seizures, with 676 firearms and 2,874 knives taken off the streets by the Met Police last year. Officers noted that individuals involved in phone theft sometimes carry weapons.

Specialist teams are trained in pursuit tactics to safely intercept suspects. During the operation, officers also stopped a car identified as suspicious by local units, which had been reported for alleged drug dealing. The driver was searched and detained, and the vehicle was seized.
