Met Police Chief: Overcrowded Jails Force Bail for Knife Suspects

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has warned that an overloaded justice system is repeatedly granting bail to knife crime suspects because of prison overcrowding. This practice, he stated, undermines efforts to control offenders and prevent further crime.

Sir Mark explained that fewer defendants accused of knife crime, including repeat offenders, are being held on remand. This means individuals are being charged multiple times for carrying knives and subsequently bailed repeatedly. "Routinely now we're seeing people charged again and again and again with carrying knives, and they're being bailed again and again and again, and that really concerns me," Sir Mark said, as reported by MyLondon.

Notting Hill Carnival Incident

The Commissioner cited an incident at the recent Notting Hill Carnival where an individual attempted to bring a weapon, described as approximately 18 inches long and resembling a small sword, into the event. This person had already committed four knife offences earlier in the year but was granted bail. "He tries to take something that looks like a small sword into carnival, and he's been bailed again," Sir Mark stated. "That is deeply concerning to me, the message that sends, and that fundamentally undermines offender control."

Firearms Offences on Bail

Similar patterns are emerging with firearms offences, Sir Mark noted. Approximately 34 individuals charged with firearms offences across London are currently on bail awaiting trial. Of these, nine had discharged weapons during confrontations. Sir Mark commented that this situation "just wouldn't have happened" a few years ago, before the justice system faced its current pressures.

Sir Mark attributed the current situation to an overburdened justice system and the government having to make difficult choices regarding prison capacity. He indicated that stricter knife crime and firearms legislation, while effective in reducing serious crime over the past 25 years, are being undermined by the system's inability to process cases effectively.
