Notting Hill Carnival: 169 arrested on first day

Police made 169 arrests on the first day of the Notting Hill Carnival as of 7:45pm on Sunday. The Metropolitan Police reported that offences included possession of drugs, possession of weapons, assaults, and sexual offences. Scotland Yard stated that the mood at the event has been 'overwhelmingly positive and celebratory'.

The annual west London carnival, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, saw over 7,000 officers deployed across the bank holiday weekend. The force said that while officers responded to a number of incidents, the majority of arrests occurred within the event perimeter.

Reduction in Serious Violence

Commander Claire Smart, who is leading the policing operation, said that proactive policing had resulted in a reduction in serious violence compared to previous years. She noted that organisers had made significant progress in areas such as crowd management. The police force confirmed they responded to two knife assaults, neither of which resulted in life-changing or threatening injuries.

Commander Smart added that officers would remain on duty through the night and into Monday to ensure crowds dispersed safely. She stated that the police would continue to tackle the 'minority who want to come to Carnival to spoil the celebration for the majority'.

In comparison, last year's carnival saw 528 arrests across its two main days, including 167 for drug offences and 50 for possession of an offensive weapon. The event continues on Monday.
