Suspects in RAF Fairford plot bailed amid foreign actor claims

Five men arrested near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on suspicion of explosives offences and terrorism have been released on bail. The suspects, aged between 23 and 25, include one from Camden, three from Westminster, and one from Willesden. They were detained on Sunday after three vans were discovered near the military site.

Foreign Actor Involvement Suggested

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the incident "clearly involves the hand of a foreign actor", and mentioned Iran as a country that has threatened US interests. However, he did not directly attribute blame. Iran has strongly denied any involvement, with its London embassy calling such speculation "unfounded and malicious".

Mr Rubio described the events as a "very serious situation" and thanked British authorities for their cooperation. He acknowledged that the release of some suspects on bail had caused concern, but stressed the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Investigation and Community Impact

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing, confirmed that the men were released on bail under "stringent conditions" but "absolutely remain under investigation". He stated that the force is keeping an open mind and considering "every possible angle", including the potential involvement of proxies or individuals acting on behalf of a foreign state. It is understood that the material found was not viable explosives, but the investigation continues.

Residents evacuated from around 85 households near RAF Fairford were permitted to return to their homes on Monday. A police cordon remains in place around the vehicles that were examined by counter terrorism officers.

US President Donald Trump expressed surprise at the decision to grant bail, stating he would not have released the suspects. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting noted that decisions regarding bail were operational matters for the police and prosecutors.
