Driver arrested after cyclist suffers life-threatening injuries in Stepney Green crash

A man has been arrested after a cyclist was left with life-threatening injuries following a collision in Stepney Green. The incident occurred on Aylward Street shortly after 11:15 pm on 6 August, according to the Metropolitan Police.

Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a car striking a cyclist. The victim, a man in his 50s, was treated at the roadside by London Ambulance Service crews before being transported to a major trauma centre.

Driver detained at the scene

The driver of the car, a 33-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Police also detained him on allegations of failing to stop after the collision and driving while unfit due to drink or drugs.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed that the man remains in custody while inquiries continue. Officers are reviewing footage posted online that appears to show the moments before the crash.

Emergency response

London Ambulance Service dispatched multiple crews to the scene, including an incident response officer and a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance. The victim was assessed and stabilised before being rushed to hospital by road.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said the patient was prioritised for urgent care. The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed, but police described them as life-threatening.
