Joshua Gray, 23, from Edmonton, has been jailed for 13 years and six months after grooming a young girl online and then travelling to Bedfordshire to commit rape and sexual assault. The sentencing took place at Luton Crown Court on Friday, October 2. Gray pleaded guilty to rape, sexual assault, sexual communication with a child, and intentional strangulation.

Online grooming and assault

Gray groomed the victim, who was a young girl, on the social media platform TikTok. He later moved their communications to Discord, where he sent numerous sexually explicit messages over a four-day period. Following this online grooming, Gray travelled from London to a village near Bedford. He persuaded the girl to meet him in a park late at night. During this meeting, Gray raped and sexually assaulted the victim. Bedfordshire Police officers located the girl at the park after she had been reported missing and arrested Gray at the scene.

Court sentence and orders

At Luton Crown Court, Gray, of Ellanby Crescent in Edmonton, received a sentence of 13 years and six months imprisonment. In addition to the prison term, he was issued a 20-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order. Detective Constable Lauren Byrne of Bedfordshire Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People team stated that Gray deliberately targeted a vulnerable young girl online and manipulated her into meeting him before abusing her. She commended the victim's bravery and expressed hope that the sentence shows a commitment to bringing offenders who exploit and abuse children to justice. She also encouraged others to report abuse, stating it is never too late.
