Lewisham man jailed for Stratford Overground robbery of teenager

A Lewisham man has been jailed for robbing a teenager of an electric bike and scooter at Stratford Overground station. Jay Archibald, 23, was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to robbery. The incident occurred on 28 June 2024.

Archibald approached the 17-year-old victim on the platform, demanding the e-bike and threatening harm if the boy resisted. The victim handed over the £1,500 e-bike and £700 e-scooter after feeling intimidated. Archibald then fled the scene on a Jubilee Line train.

Victim identifies thief through social media

The victim recognised Archibald after a friend alerted him to an online advertisement for the stolen e-bike. The listing, posted on social media, included images of the bike and the seller, whom the victim identified as the robber. The account also featured photographs of Archibald.

British Transport Police arrested Archibald following the victim’s report. Detective Constable Olesia Berdova, who led the investigation, said the incident had a significant impact on the victim’s sense of safety while using public transport.

Police urge reporting of railway robberies

Berdova praised the victim’s bravery in coming forward and expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision. She emphasised that robbery on the railway network would not be tolerated and encouraged victims or witnesses to report incidents by texting 61016.

The case highlights the role of social media in tracking stolen property. British Transport Police continue to investigate similar offences and rely on public reports to identify suspects.
