Rye Lane closed in Peckham over dangerous building fears

Rye Lane in Peckham has been closed by Southwark council due to concerns over a dangerous building at the former Tower Cinema Gateway. The closure, which is expected to last at least a week, affects pedestrians, vehicles, and cyclists. Residents have been relocated to hotels while urgent work is carried out to make the site safe.

Building Safety and Resident Support

Emergency supporting scaffolding has been installed at the Tower Cinema Gateway to stabilise the structure. Police have been present since Thursday night to prevent access to the road. James McAsh, the Green leader of Southwark council, stated that the council's immediate priority is public safety. He acknowledged the disruption caused by the closure and thanked the public for their patience. The council is working with structural engineers, building control, highways, TfL, and contractors to secure the site.

Mr McAsh confirmed that hotel accommodation and support have been arranged for affected residents. The council is working with landlords and insurers to ensure residents receive assistance while they cannot return to their homes. Arrangements are also being made for residents to collect essential belongings where it is safe to do so. The council is also engaging with local businesses to understand their needs regarding access, deliveries, and practical support during the closure.

Transport Disruption

The closure of Rye Lane has led to the diversion of several bus routes, including 36, 136, 171, 436, N89, N136, and N171, particularly those heading towards Camberwell. Transport for London (TfL) is updating its journey information and signage to reflect these changes.

History of the Site

The Tower Cinema Gateway was originally built in 1914 and ceased operations as a cinema in 1956. The auditorium was subsequently demolished and replaced by the Choumert Grove Car Park, managed by Southwark council. The remaining tower structure has been used as an entrance from the High Street.
