Camden murder victim's family fundraises for headstone

The daughters of a Camden man murdered in April 2024 have started a fundraiser to pay for his headstone, following the sentencing of his killer. Mark Carroll, 55, died after an unprovoked attack by Rasheed Rahman, who has been sentenced to at least 27 years in prison. Mr Carroll's daughters, Ayisha Carroll, 25, and Danielle Morley, 31, established the fundraiser after Rahman's conviction at Wood Green Crown Court on Thursday, September 10.

Killer's Bail Status Under Scrutiny

Rasheed Rahman, 21, who was 19 at the time of the murder, was released on police bail by the Metropolitan Police just days before he attacked Mr Carroll in St Martin's Gardens, Camden, on April 10, 2024. Rahman had previously been involved in another violent incident in East London where he stabbed a man, but delays in police gathering CCTV meant he was not apprehended for that attack until after Mr Carroll's death. He was convicted of murder, carrying a knife, threatening with an offensive weapon, and robbery.

Following the sentencing, Ms Carroll and Ms Morley stated their desire for an external review into the circumstances surrounding Rahman's release on bail. Ayisha Carroll told MyLondon that the family wishes to understand how an individual with a history of violence could be released back into the community. She also highlighted the financial difficulties they have faced since her father's death, which have hindered their ability to save for a headstone.

The fundraiser, which has a target of £2,000, aims to cover the cost of a headstone. Any additional funds raised will be donated to the charity Hundred Families, which provided support to the family throughout the trial process. The sisters described their father as a "kind man" who was "unintentionally and intentionally a very, very charming and funny person" and said that diaries he kept for them have provided comfort.

The family is also seeking an inquest into Mr Carroll's death and is working with Hundred Families to ascertain what information they are entitled to regarding the multiple arrests Rahman had made by the Met Police in the days leading up to the incident. Ms Carroll also spoke of the anxiety and difficulty of navigating the judicial system, noting the frequent delays families experience while awaiting justice.
