Man denies murder over 2006 assault victim's death

Jordan Burton, 33, is on trial at the Old Bailey accused of murder after Daniel Allright died from an epileptic seizure more than 15 years after a violent assault. Mr Allright, who was 16 at the time of the 2006 attack in south-east London, suffered brain injuries and developed epilepsy as a result of being struck with weapons. He died during a seizure at his home in March 2022, aged 31.

The 2006 Attack

The court heard that the incident occurred in September 2006 in Oscar Street and Friendly Gardens in Lewisham. Mr Allright was riding his bicycle with friends when a group of youths attempted to rob them. Mr Allright told police that Burton asked if he wanted to fight before striking him multiple times with a piece of wood. Other individuals then joined the assault, using weapons while Mr Allright tried to defend himself.

Following the attack, Mr Allright experienced significant bleeding around his brain and increased pressure within his skull, necessitating a craniotomy. He suffered his first seizure in March 2007 and was prescribed medication for epilepsy. Prosecutors stated that his seizures became more severe in the months leading up to his death.

The Trial at the Old Bailey

Burton, who resides in Achilles Street, Lewisham, denies the murder charge. He also faces an alternative charge of manslaughter, which the jury may consider. The prosecution's case, as outlined by Duncan Atkinson KC, is that Burton was involved in a joint attack where Mr Allright was struck with weapons capable of causing serious harm. The Crown contends that Burton either inflicted the harm himself with intent or intentionally helped others to do so.

In 2008, Burton admitted charges of violent disorder and grievous bodily harm (GBH) relating to the incident. He was charged with murder by postal requisition in October 2025 and entered a not guilty plea at Croydon Magistrates' Court the following month, stating he did not intend to cause serious bodily harm to Mr Allright.

The court heard that police forced entry to Burton's home in 2024 to arrest him after he did not answer the door. He had previously been invited for a voluntary interview following Mr Allright's death but did not attend. When later interviewed, he declined to answer police questions.
