Sab Cox cleared of rape in Islington

Sab Cox, 26, has been cleared of rape by a jury at the Old Bailey. Cox, who identifies as non-binary, was accused of raping a date they met on the Bumble app. The musician travelled from Birmingham to meet the complainant in Islington, north London, for New Year's Eve celebrations.

Journey to Islington

The court heard that Cox and the complainant met on a dating app and travelled to Islington to celebrate. During the bus journey back to the complainant's bedsit, the atmosphere became tense. Prosecutor Simon Ward told the jury that Cox punched a bus window after taking exception to the way someone was looking at their date. The complainant stated that Cox said, "I see myself as a guy and you’re a girl and I have to protect you," which confused them as both individuals identify as non-binary.

Railway Incident and Verdict

Upon returning to the bedsit, Cox initiated sexual activity with the complainant. The court was informed that police were called after Cox jumped onto railway tracks at Drayton railway station while on the phone to the complainant. Cox maintained that the sex was consensual, both in a police interview and during evidence given to the court. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning a not guilty verdict on Tuesday afternoon. Cox became emotional in the dock upon hearing the decision.

With the acquittal, the legal proceedings against Sab Cox have concluded. No further action is expected in relation to the rape charge.
