Dino Donaldson, 22, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years for the murder of Anojan Gnaneswaran. The fatal stabbing took place on April 3, 2024, at Strawberry Hill station in Twickenham following a dispute over MDMA valued at approximately £50. Mr Gnaneswaran, a 21-year-old accounting student, suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The court heard that the incident began as a disagreement between two groups of men at the station. The situation escalated quickly, leading Donaldson to arm himself with a knife and pursue Mr Gnaneswaran onto the railway tracks. The attack was captured on CCTV and witnessed by bystanders. British Transport Police described the event as a shocking act of violence in a public space.

Boasting and Arrest

Evidence presented during the trial included doorbell camera footage where Donaldson was heard boasting about the stabbing. He stated, “I stabbed him through the back bro, I stabbed him fully. I watched it and I felt it go in him, yeah.” Prosecutors highlighted that Donaldson showed no remorse in the immediate aftermath, being recorded laughing and smiling on a night bus less than an hour after Mr Gnaneswaran was pronounced dead.

Police located Donaldson several days after the murder. He was found hiding inside a cupboard at his home. A subsequent search of his bedroom uncovered 74 wraps of crack cocaine and heroin, estimated to be worth over £1,000.

During sentencing at the Old Bailey, the judge remarked on the tragic loss of a young life over a dispute of minimal value. The judge stated that Mr Gnaneswaran's family would live with the consequences of the killing for the rest of their lives. Donaldson was convicted of murder following a trial.

The sentence means Donaldson will be eligible for parole consideration only after serving the minimum 23-year term, placing his potential release into his mid-forties.
