William Raison, a 75-year-old from Surbiton, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a year of abuse against a young girl known to him. The court also imposed an additional year on licence.

Guilty plea and sentencing

Raison pleaded guilty to seven charges at Guildford Crown Court on Friday, 19 June. These included two counts of sexual assault by penetration of a girl under 13, four counts of sexual assault of a girl under 13, and making 216 Category C indecent images of children. He was sentenced on Thursday, 17 September.

The survivor confided in her family in February 2025, which led to Raison's arrest. During police interviews, the survivor recounted instances of abuse and Raison's dismissive response when challenged directly. Investigating officer DC Kiki Phillips stated that Raison used grooming behaviours to facilitate the abuse and encouraged the victim to remain silent.

Court orders and police statement

In addition to the prison sentence, the court granted a lifelong restraining order to protect the survivor and her family. A 15-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order was also issued. DC Phillips praised the survivor's courage, stating that her testimony allowed officers to gather significant forensic and digital evidence. The officer expressed hope that the survivor and her family could find solace and that the survivor recognised the lives she had helped save.

Police reminded the public that victims of sexual offences can report crimes at any time.
