Teenager jailed for carrying 6-inch blade at Stratford station

Walter de Carvalho pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court on Thursday, 10 September. He was apprehended by plain clothes officers on Wednesday, 9 September.
Previous Offences and Licence Recall
De Carvalho was on licence from a previous sentence of 46 months, imposed in January, for the sale of weapons and firearms. Officers stopped him at the station and found a small amount of cannabis. A further search revealed a 6-inch dagger concealed in his tracksuit bottoms, despite his initial claims of not carrying any weapon.
British Transport Police Sergeant Julian Mason stated that officers gave de Carvalho "numerous opportunities to admit he was carrying the dagger" but he repeatedly claimed he had nothing on him. Sergeant Mason added that the plain clothes team "pulled this shocking weapon from his trousers". The police worked with the probation service and the courts to ensure de Carvalho was immediately recalled to prison.
De Carvalho was detained overnight and returned to the Young Offenders Institute the day after his court appearance. Sergeant Mason noted that being released on licence for prior weapons offences "did little to deter him from carrying a potentially lethal knife in public".
