Neutron Tower fire: Residents face weeks in hotels

More than a week after a fire in Neutron Tower, Poplar, over 50 residents remain displaced and are staying in hotels. The blaze, which occurred on 12 September, resulted in one fatality and forced residents from their homes on the 17th and 18th floors of the 22-storey building on Blackwall Way.

Residents are currently only able to access their flats for essential items. Building manager First Port stated that the delay in returning home is necessary to ensure the building's safety following investigations, safety assessments, and necessary repairs.

Extended Hotel Stays

In a recent communication, First Port informed residents that they should anticipate remaining in hotel accommodation for a minimum of another eight days. The company acknowledged the difficulty and uncertainty of the situation but stressed the importance of safety before reoccupation. The decision to extend hotel bookings was described as one that had "not been taken lightly".

Katarzyna Krupecka, a resident on the fifth floor, described the living conditions as "difficult" and "disruptive" to education, with families living out of suitcases and lacking access to basic facilities like washing machines and cooking equipment. She expressed a desire for a clearer timeframe for their return home.

Ayaz Rahman, another resident, reported that he and his disabled wife had been moved to different hotel rooms twice in the past week, highlighting the daily challenges. His wife, Bushra Chowdhry, stated that the prolonged displacement was making them feel increasingly homeless.

Investigation into Fire and Alarms

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the London Fire Brigade, which sent 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters to the scene. The flames were brought under control within two hours. Several residents have raised concerns about the building's safety systems, reporting that fire alarms did not sound and emergency lighting did not activate during the incident.

Some residents suggested a possible link between the fire and a flood that occurred the previous day. The London Fire Brigade has not yet released details regarding the fire's cause or the functioning of the building's safety equipment.
