Alexandru Oprea jailed for 11 years after rape conviction in Barnet-linked case

Alexandru Oprea, a 32-year-old man with ties to Barnet, was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison in June 2026. The sentence followed his conviction for rape, sexual assaults, indecent exposure and other offences committed in Essex in 2023. Oprea did not attend his trial and was convicted in his absence.

Victim speaks of ongoing trauma

Oprea’s victim, who waited three years for the sentencing, said she is still struggling to cope with the aftermath of the crimes. In a statement reported by Your Local Guardian, she said, "I am still struggling to calm myself because after the sentencing it feels like everything is coming back to my mind." She added that she is grateful for the support she has received.

Police appeal for information

Crimestoppers, the independent charity that collates appeals from police forces, has listed Oprea as one of the most wanted individuals in London. Police believe he may still be in the UK and have urged the public not to approach him if seen. Instead, they ask anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or the police on 101.

Oprea is described as having sleeve-style tattoos on both arms, his chest and his stomach. He is known to have links to Barnet, Leicester and Romania. The offences for which he was convicted took place in Essex, but his connections to London have prompted local police to issue warnings to residents.

Police continue to search for Oprea, who remains at large. The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any sightings immediately. His sentence will only begin once he is apprehended, and authorities have not confirmed whether additional charges may be brought if he is found outside the UK.
